AdParlor Employee Spotlight: Karley MacDonald

AdParlor Blog Post: AdParlor Employee Spotlight - Karley MacDonald

Here at AdParlor, we are committed to achieving our mission and vision: Setting the Standard for People-Based Marketing. We’re not able to achieve this mission without a dedicated staff of media and creative experts who live and breath social, video and display advertising. We’re proud of our culture and community, so we wanted to highlight a little more about who makes the AdParlor team.

We interviewed Karley MacDonald who is a Developer and Engineering Team Lead in our Toronto office. Check out a little bit more about her below.

Q: What is your name?

Karley MacDonald

Q: Where are you from?

Toronto

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

I love sports and still regularly play soccer, volleyball, dodgeball and golf. I also love when I have time to sit down with a good non-tech book.

Q: What is your position at AdParlor?

I’m a Developer/Team Lead on the Engineering team

Q: What is it like to be a woman working in a technology-driven company?

I love that technology is always changing because that means there is always something to learn. Though it can be challenging at times to keep up with (especially in the world of frontend development!), I value the constant growth that comes with it. I think that the biggest challenge is that there is still not enough girls who are encouraged to study STEM disciplines. I think that there are biases that exist and probably won’t change in my lifetime about what women are inherently capable of and that leads to biases in the workplace. It is not a challenge unique to women. There are many industries with underrepresented groups who face the same challenges I do as a woman in tech. When I am struggling I think part of what drives me is thinking of my nieces and reminding myself that the more I can do to normalize “women in tech” the more doors it will open for them in the future.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at AdParlor?

Since I started at AdParlor I’ve had amazing mentors who have given me opportunities to become both a better developer and a stronger leader. I’m very grateful for the culture of collaboration that exists within the team.

Q: If you had a Super power, what would it be?

I would be fluent in every language, including programming languages!
